Apple has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI, accusing the artificial intelligence company of exploiting confidential trade secrets in a lawsuit filed in a US federal court. The tech giant alleges that OpenAI has gained access to sensitive information concerning Apple’s hardware development, manufacturing methodologies, and supply chain operations through former Apple employees.

The complaint centers on accusations that ex-Apple employees who transitioned to OpenAI retained and disclosed proprietary information. This, Apple contends, provided OpenAI with an undue advantage in its efforts to develop consumer AI hardware products. Apple further alleges that these former employees have accessed confidential data, engaged with Apple suppliers, and sought sensitive insights during recruitment discussions.

Among those mentioned in the lawsuit are several former Apple executives and engineers. Notably, Chang Liu is accused of not returning a company-issued laptop after his departure. Additionally, the complaint cites Tang Yew Tan, a former senior executive at Apple and now OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer, alleging that he engaged in discussions with OpenAI affiliates and Apple suppliers before leaving the company.

Apple asserts that OpenAI and its affiliates have systematically targeted its confidential technology and manufacturing expertise to fast-track their entry into the consumer AI hardware market. The company claims that over 400 former Apple employees are currently employed by OpenAI and notes that it has previously raised these concerns with OpenAI without receiving a response.

In seeking legal redress, Apple is asking the court for both preliminary and permanent injunctions to prevent the continued use of its trade secrets. The company is also pursuing financial damages for what it describes as intentional and harmful misappropriation of its confidential business information. As of now, OpenAI has not issued a public response to the lawsuit.
