Tensions have flared in Poland’s political landscape after comments made by Chargé d’Affaires Piotr Łukasiewicz during the commemoration of the Volhynia Massacre in Ukraine. Łukasiewicz’s remarks, which acknowledged the violence against Polish victims by Ukrainians and vice versa, have been met with criticism from both the public and political figures.

The comments ignited a response from Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who came to Łukasiewicz’s defense. Deputy Minister Andrzej Szeptycki also expressed support for the diplomat, while simultaneously criticizing President Karol Nawrocki for his statements regarding historical relations with national minorities in the Second Polish Republic.

Szeptycki contended that the treatment of minorities in the past should not be considered “normal,” referencing historical events such as the Pacification of Eastern Galicia and the discrimination faced by minority communities. His position, however, was met with criticism from opposition lawmakers who accused him of minimizing the historical violence faced by Poles.

This controversy underscores the persistent strains in Poland over how historical events, especially the legacy of the Volhynia Massacre and Polish-Ukrainian relations, are interpreted and remembered. The debate highlights the complexities and sensitivities surrounding historical narratives and national memory in the region.
