Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, is currently under mounting pressure to bring back former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov amidst ongoing national protests against his removal. Zelenskyy’s recent decision to shake up Ukraine’s military leadership, which included replacing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi with Mykhailo Drapatyi, has not quelled public unrest. Fedorov turned down an offer to serve as deputy prime minister, maintaining that his return as defence minister is crucial for him to continue his agenda of modernizing and reforming the armed forces.
With special forces commander Yevhenii Khmara serving as the interim head of the defence ministry, Fedorov’s reinstatement would require yet another change in leadership. Protest organizers have made it clear that demonstrations will persist in Kyiv until Fedorov is back in his former role, raising fears that the political impasse could drag on into a second week.
As the leadership dispute unfolds, Ukraine has ramped up its military efforts against Russia, deploying drone strikes aimed at military and economic targets within Russian borders. Newly appointed Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi has been entrusted with broadening offensive operations, enhancing military capacity, fostering new technologies, and advancing operations behind enemy lines.
Drapatyi’s appointment has been met with approval from several Ukrainian political and military figures, who regard him as a seasoned and adept leader. Despite this support, military officials caution that he faces formidable obstacles, notably the potential for increased Russian troop mobilization in the near future. The reshuffling of leadership stems from disagreements over military strategy, with Fedorov pushing for swift technological advancements, in contrast to the previous leadership’s preference for a more conventional approach.
Russia, on its part, has downplayed the impact of Ukraine’s leadership changes, asserting that they are unlikely to influence the situation on the battlefield and reiterating that its military actions will continue unabated.
