Christopher Nolan has once again showcased his commitment to practical effects in filmmaking by creating the imposing 10-foot-tall Laestrygonians for his film adaptation of The Odyssey. Rather than relying on extensive CGI, Nolan employed practical effects and forced perspective techniques to bring these mythical giants to life.

During a discussion on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Damon, who stars as Odysseus, revealed insights into the making of the giant sequence. The production team utilized precise camera techniques and assembled a cast of performers of varying heights to achieve the illusion of scale. Stunt performers exceeding seven feet in height were cast to play the giants, with shorter performers contributing to the forced perspective effect, enhancing the giants’ towering presence on screen.

Damon also highlighted the dedication of a female stunt performer who served as one of his doubles in these demanding scenes. He expressed admiration for her strength and commitment, noting that he personally thanked her for her contributions to the film’s challenging sequences. Behind-the-scenes images shared by the stunt team have illustrated the striking height differences employed, underscoring Nolan’s dedication to practical filmmaking techniques.

The Odyssey, inspired by Homer’s classic epic poem, chronicles the journey of Odysseus as he endeavors to return home following the Trojan War.
