Efforts to address the protracted Cyprus conflict have seen the European Union step up its role, as it appoints new envoys and affirms its backing for the United Nations-led peace initiative. This comes in anticipation of an upcoming visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, aimed at invigorating the stalled peace process.
The EU’s actions have, however, drawn skepticism from Turkish Cypriot officials, who question the bloc’s ability to remain neutral given that the Republic of Cyprus is already an EU member. They voiced their disapproval over the EU’s decision to appoint a new envoy for Cyprus without consulting the Turkish Cypriot community, highlighting concerns over the EU’s impartiality in the matter.
In response, the European Commission has clarified that its special representative is tasked with fostering trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, as well as supporting the revival of negotiations within the UN framework. EU officials have consistently expressed their determination to support efforts aimed at achieving a durable resolution to the conflict.
The Cyprus issue has been a lingering challenge for decades, with the last round of peace talks breaking down in 2017. Turkish Cypriot leaders continue to insist that any forthcoming negotiations must acknowledge their sovereign equality and equal standing on the international stage before discussions can formally recommence.
