Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg in the GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as both nations seek to bolster their defense and security collaboration. The potential partnership was a focal point during Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner’s recent visit to Luxembourg, where she engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Yuriko Backes. Their talks centered on expanding cooperation in the domains of defense, space, and cybersecurity.

In addition to meeting with Minister Backes, Tanner also held discussions with SES, a satellite operator, to evaluate Austria’s involvement in the GovSat 2 project. Tanner emphasized the increasing significance of secure satellite communications amid rising geopolitical tensions. She noted that enhanced cooperation in this area would strengthen the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.

GovSat 2 aims to deliver secure communication services primarily for Luxembourg’s defense sector, as well as the European Union, NATO, and allied nations. The satellite launch is slated for 2029, marking a significant step in Luxembourg’s defense strategy. As Austria considers its participation, the financial commitment from Vienna remains unannounced, pending further discussions and evaluations.

To further cement their collaborative efforts, the two countries signed a letter of intent to enhance cooperation in several defense-related areas. These include cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. This agreement signifies a mutual commitment to advancing their defense capabilities through shared expertise and resources.
