Mark Rutte, the Secretary-General of NATO, has urged member countries and partner nations to persist in providing military aid to Ukraine, with a particular emphasis on air defense systems, as the NATO summit approaches in Turkey. Speaking in Ankara ahead of the two-day gathering of the 32-member alliance, Rutte highlighted Ukraine’s shifting battlefield dynamics but emphasized the necessity for ongoing international support to uphold its defense capabilities. He mentioned that the summit is likely to feature new long-term commitments aimed at bolstering Ukraine.
Rutte also condemned the recent large-scale Russian offensives on Ukrainian cities, which have led to civilian casualties. He remarked on the uncertainty surrounding what might motivate Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in serious peace negotiations. Alongside Rutte, Finnish President Alexander Stubb voiced optimism about Ukraine’s current strategic position, noting that the country’s operations within Russia have swayed global perceptions of the conflict.
The summit will place significant attention on enhancing NATO’s defense capabilities. Members of the alliance are striving to reach a defense spending target of 5% of GDP by the year 2035, responding to increased calls for heightened military readiness. Rutte acknowledged the considerable rise in defense spending by European NATO members and Canada, emphasizing that these initiatives are contributing to the formation of a more robust alliance.
