During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a direct meeting to further peace negotiations, stating that he sees “no point” in such discussions at the current time. Zelenskyy had suggested a face-to-face meeting in a neutral location like Switzerland or Turkey to initiate diplomatic talks from the existing frontlines and enforce a complete ceasefire during the discussions.
Putin reiterated that Russia’s strategic goals in Ukraine remain consistent, asserting that Russian forces have already secured control over the entire Luhansk region and most of the Donetsk region. He also restated Moscow’s demand for Ukraine to cede control of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. In response to the rejection, Zelenskyy criticized the Kremlin for opting to prolong the conflict rather than seeking a diplomatic resolution, indicating that Russia’s refusal reflects a disinterest in ending the war.
Amid these diplomatic tensions, Ukraine has stepped up its military operations against Russian targets, increasing attacks on military and energy infrastructures, which include drone strikes aimed at ports, cargo ships, and fuel depots. The Russian government acknowledged these recent strikes and expressed intentions to bolster its air defense systems in response.
Putin also addressed concerns regarding the Russian economy, which has faced significant challenges due to the ongoing conflict and international sanctions. Despite these pressures, he defended the economy’s resilience, arguing that Russia has managed to withstand the economic and financial restrictions imposed by Western countries.
