EasyJet Blasts European Politicians Over “Crazy” Free Baggage Legislation Proposal

EasyJet has launched a scathing critique of European Union lawmakers, characterizing their plan to mandate free cabin baggage for all passengers as “crazy legislation” that demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of airline operations.
The proposed regulations, which gained substantial support in the European Parliament last week, would revolutionize baggage policies across the continent. Every passenger flying to or from an EU airport on an EU-based carrier would be entitled to both a personal item and a larger carry-on bag at no additional cost.
The airline’s chief executive expressed frustration with what he sees as political overreach into commercial aviation matters. He pointed out that the physical constraints of aircraft cabins make it impossible to accommodate unlimited carry-on luggage without compromising boarding efficiency and punctuality.
From a business perspective, the legislation threatens to eliminate a significant revenue stream that helps subsidize lower base fares. EasyJet generates over £2.5 billion annually from ancillary services, with baggage fees forming a substantial portion of this income that would need to be recovered through higher ticket prices.
Meanwhile, the airline reported quarterly losses of £93 million, though this was partly attributed to strategic investments in Italian airports. Looking forward, EasyJet sees strong booking momentum and growing customer interest in diverse international destinations beyond traditional European routes.
