This summer, Europe has experienced a series of severe heatwaves, resulting in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with expectations that the true number could be much higher. As more countries finalize their evaluations, the full impact of these heatwaves is still being determined.
Germany, France, and Spain have been particularly hard hit, accounting for over 25,000 of these excess deaths. Germany alone has reported approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking this summer as the deadliest on record for the country in terms of heat. Spain, from May onwards, has seen nearly 5,000 deaths linked to high temperatures, also setting a record. Meanwhile, France has preliminarily reported about 7,300 excess deaths between late May and July, with August data yet to be included.
In addition to these countries, other nations like the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have also observed significant increases in deaths during these extreme heat periods. Throughout these heatwaves, temperatures soared above 40°C in numerous areas across western and central Europe, shattering many national and local records. Scientists attribute the rising frequency and severity of such heat events to climate change.
Identifying deaths directly caused by heat can be challenging, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing health issues such as cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. These complications can make it difficult to record heat as the direct cause of death. As delayed mortality data is gathered and reports from August are included, experts anticipate that the total death toll across the continent will rise.
The significant number of deaths underscores an increasing public health concern associated with the intensifying heatwaves. As Europe grapples with these climate challenges, the emphasis on understanding and mitigating the risks becomes ever more crucial.
