The ‘Operation Sindoor’ Controversy: How Trump Uses a Disputed Claim Against India

Operation Sindoor’, a little-known codename for a de-escalated Indian military plan, has been repeatedly weaponized by US President Donald Trump as a political tool against India, with his UN General Assembly speech being the latest and most high-profile example. The controversy highlights his use of disputed claims to both burnish his own image and undermine an ally.
Trump’s claim is simple and bold: he “stopped a war” between India and Pakistan. He presents this as a fact, a key part of his foreign policy legacy for which he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. By repeating it at the UN, he attempted to solidify this narrative in the global consciousness.
However, the claim is highly controversial and consistently rejected by India. New Delhi’s official stance is that its decision to stand down was a sovereign one, made after a request from Pakistan, not due to a command from Washington. This makes Trump’s assertion a direct challenge to India’s version of its own recent history.
By repeatedly raising this issue, Trump achieves two things. First, he promotes himself as a master dealmaker and peacemaker. Second, he subtly puts India on the defensive, creating a point of friction and a sense of obligation. It becomes a tool in his transactional diplomacy, a favor he believes he is owed.
While his accusation about India funding the Ukraine war was the more severe part of his speech, the ‘Operation Sindoor’ controversy is a persistent irritant. It demonstrates a willingness to manipulate historical narratives for political gain, a tactic that erodes trust and complicates an already challenging relationship with India.
