Trump’s “Force of Will” Overlooked by Nobel Committee

The “sheer force of will” that the White House says allows Donald Trump to “move mountains” was a quality that the Norwegian Nobel Committee chose to overlook this year. They instead awarded the 2025 Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, a leader known for her collaborative and unifying approach.
The statement from Trump’s communications director was a vivid celebration of his individualistic and forceful style of leadership. It portrayed him as a singular figure whose personal power shapes world events, a narrative that has been central to his political identity.
The Nobel committee, however, opted for a different kind of hero. They honored Machado not for her force of will, but for her ability to create a collective will. Her prize was for bringing people together and forging consensus within a diverse opposition movement.
This fundamental difference in leadership philosophy appears to be at the heart of the 2025 Nobel decision. The committee rewarded the art of persuasion and compromise over the exercise of unilateral power.
While Trump’s supporters see his “force of will” as his greatest asset, it may have been his greatest liability in the eyes of a committee dedicated to fostering “international fraternity.” They chose the bridge-builder over the mountain-mover.
