Amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump is set to host representatives from both nations at the White House on November 5. This meeting follows her involvement in facilitating a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, a city in Ukraine’s Kherson region occupied by Russian forces.

The ceasefire, which lasted from October 27 to November 1, enabled the evacuation of several hundred civilians, most of whom moved to Ukrainian-controlled territories. According to a statement from the White House, Melania Trump took the initiative to independently contact both sides, playing a crucial role in the humanitarian agreement.

Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, acknowledged the efforts of Melania Trump’s team in securing and coordinating the ceasefire, stating that representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States signed the agreement, with the U.S. acting as a guarantor.

Despite the successful evacuation, concerns persist over the situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military officials have warned that Russian forces might have used the ceasefire to move equipment and fortify their positions. However, Ukrainian authorities have countered claims of ceasefire violations, explaining that some movements were necessary for demining operations.

Currently, several hundred civilians remain in Oleshky, receiving humanitarian aid. Discussions on further evacuation efforts are anticipated in the coming months as the situation evolves.

The upcoming meeting at the White House offers a platform to evaluate the humanitarian agreement and potentially foster further diplomatic dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. Details about the attendees and the agenda remain undisclosed by the White House.
