What began as a dismissed proposal has become an urgent alliance. Ukraine, whose offer to help the United States counter Iranian drones was brushed aside months ago, is now actively deploying its specialists to protect American military bases in the Middle East. The turnaround reflects both the severity of the current conflict and the shortsightedness of earlier decisions made in Washington.
Iran’s drone campaign against American and allied positions in West Asia escalated sharply following US and Israeli strikes inside Iran that destroyed key military infrastructure and resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28. Tehran’s response has included sustained drone and missile attacks targeting American bases and Gulf state allies. The human toll for US forces has reached seven dead, with financial costs running into the millions.
Ukraine’s offer, made in mid-2024, stemmed directly from its battlefield experience fighting Russian forces armed with Iranian Shahed drones. Kyiv had developed interceptor drones and complementary air defense systems that proved highly effective at minimal cost. Ukrainian officials prepared a detailed briefing for Washington that included both the technology and a strategic framework for deploying it across West Asia.
The proposal was personally advanced by Zelensky during his August White House visit, where he briefed Trump and his team. Trump reportedly asked his staff to take the matter forward. Yet no follow-through occurred, and the reasons appear to be partly political — certain officials viewed Ukraine’s pitch as self-serving rather than strategically sound.
Today, the situation looks entirely different. Ukrainian drone specialists are on the ground in Jordan at American request. Teams have also fanned out to Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. The speed of Ukraine’s response — mobilizing within a single day of the US request — stands in sharp contrast to the months of inaction that preceded the current crisis.
