Concerns have emerged regarding contracts amounting to as much as PLN 324,000 granted by Poland’s Ministry of Justice to Professor Tadeusz Tomaszewski. Tomaszewski is the head of a working group tasked with drafting legislation concerning court-appointed expert witnesses. This working group was formed in April 2024, and its operational guidelines specify that members should not receive any payment for their participation in its activities.
Despite this stipulation, data from the Ministry of Justice indicates that Tomaszewski was awarded a civil-law contract valued at PLN 8,000 per month, totaling PLN 192,000. Additionally, a second contract, which took effect in May 2026, offers an extra PLN 11,000 monthly. If this second contract is active for its entire duration, the combined financial commitment could amount to around PLN 324,000. The ministry has yet to disclose the specific tasks covered by these contracts.
In light of these revelations, a legal association has sought further clarification and access to the contracts to ascertain if the compensated work was distinct from Tomaszewski’s unpaid duties in the working group. Determining the nature of these contracts is crucial, as any overlap with his responsibilities in preparing legislation, analyzing, consulting, or coordinating tasks related to court-appointed experts could spark questions about the propriety of the payments.
While the contracts might pertain to different assignments, which would eliminate any potential conflict, further scrutiny is needed. The legal association awaits the Ministry of Justice’s response, which is expected to provide the requested documentation for a clearer understanding of the situation. Until then, the details of Tomaszewski’s compensated roles remain under examination, pending official clarification.
